A BARNSLEY man who assaulted an emergency service worker has avoided being sent to jail.

Last Wednesday, officers located a man who had been circulated as wanted for multiple theft offences.

Thomas Gummerson, 42, was arrested after four thefts from shops in Barnsley town centre.

While in custody, Gummerson was further arrested for an assault against an emergency service worker.

He was charged with the offences and, on Monday, he appeared at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court where he received a 12-week suspended prison sentence.
